You are likely here because you are interested in Insight’s Skills Academy, or maybe you just like the colour choices on this site and want to see more – if there’s one thing I've learnt, it's that a fuchsia filled office screams “great things happen here”.
I know from my own experience that the IT Industry can be intimidating; with the idea that you have to be at the level of the likes of Martha Lane Fox and Tim Cook, when in fact – although these specialists and geniuses exist – that is by no means the requirement to break into Tech. Success starts with a great conversation, a commitment, and a forward plan – and Insight’s Skill’s Academy has afforded me these things.
Since I could pick up a Gameboy Colour I have been technologically inclined. I could reset a router, remove my fingers from a VHS safely, and port-forward a games console (one for the 00’s kids out there), but I never thought I could work for an IT giant - I couldn’t have been more wrong. Skills Academy empowered me to take the first step and if you’re thinking about applying, I cannot encourage you more highly to do so.
I must admit that when I got the position as Skills Academy associate the imposter syndrome hit me like a ton of bricks, BUT I soon realised – with the help of Insight’s Skills Academy mentors – that it was nonsense. The team could not have been more welcoming; making it clear, immediately, that they are there to help us with our development, and they will not let us fail. Guidance was available around every corner, from the learning team to our mentors, managers and everyone else in the office, and across EMEA. We were made to feel truly supported, and the excitement was there – from everyone - to witness our success and see where our careers would go.
We all have “wobbly” days - days when we don’t feel confident or where there is too much information in our heads, but Skills Academy has taught me that those days are actually the motivation to keep showing up, keep switching on. I found that my mentors were so aware and conscious, that the support needed was available on those “wobbly” days, even more than ever!
I have not met one person who regrets their decision to join the Skills Academy, only people who are excited by the learning and progression it has provided.
If you are thinking about it, you’re already halfway there. Don’t delay applying – it’s a truly fantastic experience.
